Robert was the president of an America Civil War re-enactment society. He was a brilliant historian and a deeply passionate re-enactment specialist. He and scores of other members of the society would travel across the country three times each month re-enacting significant civil war battles to help the American people remember the high price that was paid to enjoy the freedoms we now must not take for granted. He had invested thousands of hours and countless amounts of money to bring these historic events to life once again.
That’s why Robert’s house fire was exceptionally devastating. His home was the museum-like storage facility for all things civil war. For decades he had collected hundreds of complete handmade civil war uniforms: hats, shirts, jackets, pants, belts, leather boots, leather ammunition and powder pouches. This collection was priceless. How do you value something like this? One hundred thousand dollars? Two hundred thousand dollars? More? And, if the collection could not be saved how on earth was he going to be able to replace the collection? It had taken decades to collect this. The society had bookings and engagements to keep across the county. All would need to be cancelled.
